Bridge to nowhere? Some doubts on U.S. economy justified, doom and gloom is not

Getty Images
Wall Street scurrying for the exits? More and more investors apparently see the economy becoming a bridge to nowhere.

Just a few months ago, investors drove the U.S. stock market SPX, -2.33%  to an all-time high. Now they’re scurrying for the off-ramp and showing fresh doubts about economy. Have things really gone south that fast?

Not really.

The economy is forecast to grow at an above-average speed of 2.6% in the fourth quarter, for one thing. Consumer confidence is at a two-decade high. The unemployment rate remains at a 49-year low. And the holiday shopping season is shaping up to be a big one.

Still, some warning signs have emerged.

Home sales have softened after a rise in mortgage rates. Corporate investment has tapered off. Job creation slowed in November. And a festering trade dispute with China and resulting tariffs have raised costs for businesses and consumers.

“It’s becoming clearer by the day that the best days for this economic cycle are behind us,” asserted Scott Anderson, chief economist of Bank of the West.

The sudden shift in perception is forcing the Federal Reserve to reconsider how many times it will raises interest rates in the next year.

Not only does the economy seem a touch more vulnerable than it did a few months ago, a recent upturn in inflation also appears to have crested. The Fed has been gradually raising rates to head off an unwelcome increase in rates, but now the problem seems less urgent.

One sign came last week in a weaker-than-expected November employment report. The economy added just 155,000 new jobs — well below the 190,000 forecast — and the yearly increase in hourly wage growth stood pat at 3.1%.

More evidence might emerge this week. The consumer price index, which tracks the cost of living, could show a flat or even negative reading for the first time in eight months. The annual rate of inflation as measured by the CPI could drop to a nine-month low of 2.2% from 2.5%

Similarly weak readings are likely in other inflation barometers for wholesale U.S. goods and imported products.

What’s a common thread?

Falling oil prices . A surge in petroleum helped fuel an upturn in inflation earlier this year that spurred the Fed to raise U.S. interest rates three times. Now lower oil prices are acting as a brake on inflation.

Lower oil prices CLF9, +1.24%  will probably deliver seemingly disappointing retail sales in November.

Americans spent a lot less filling up at gas stations, making it look like retailers had a bad month. Economists polled by MarketWatch predict a lackluster 0.2% increase.

“Here’s a word of advice on anyone planning to use the November retail sales report as a guide to how the holiday shopping season is going: don’t,” said chief economist Richard Moody of Regions Financial.

California Wildfires Cause Major Disruption to Door and Window Dealers

From a Milgard dealer who lost his home, to disruption of delivery schedules and employees having to endure severe environmental conditions, the California wild fires are having real effects on the door and window industry.

Labeled the “Camp Fire,” California’s latest wild fire has been one of the deadliest in history. While USA Today reports that the fire has finally been contained, since November 8, 2018, it spread from Butte County, Calif., across 150,000 acres, claiming at least 85 lives along the way, with another 249 still listed as missing. In just 22 days, total destruction includes 19,000 homes and buildings—including one door and window dealer’s home.

Natasha Ramsey, a regional marketing specialist for Milgard Windows and Doors, who’s based in Simi Valley, Calif., reports that some of the company’s dealers had to close for several days, because their homes and offices were so close to the fire. One Milgard dealer even lost his home. Milgard’s facilities were not harmed by the fire, and were able to remain open, but not without disruptions.

“[The fires] affected our delivery of product to dealers in the fire zone,” says Ramsey. “We had to delay some of our routes for up to a week due to this.”

In Chico, Calif., “The skies were black and we couldn’t work,” says Lori Lash, owner of Lash’s Glass. “The air quality was horrible.” Chico is approximately 15 miles from the city of Paradise, Calif., which, according to news reports, was more or less destroyed.

Lash says that many jobs went on hold and the company had to close early during the height of the Camp Fire. She housed a number of people who were impacted personally and let them use her yard. She also housed chefs who came to the area in order to help feed Paradise citizens left homeless. In the midst of the tragedy, Lash also turned to giving people free auto glass, which she provides in addition to flat glass.

“This is going to be an ongoing thing that won’t be over for a while,” says Lash.

In Southern California, the Woolsey fire has also done severe damage to homes and businesses. Travis Shields, project manager at Oakstone Glass Corp., located in Thousand Oaks, Calif., says people who work for the company were evacuated from the area. He says there hasn’t been an overwhelming request for repairs, because most of the buildings and homes affected were completely destroyed.

Much of the area couldn’t be accessed until this week, Shields says. His company has received a few calls about residential and institutional buildings that have broken windows caused by the heat of the fire.

“For the second year in a row, Millennials make up the largest group of homebuyers, seeing the value of this smart investment,” said Amy Bonitatibus, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer for Chase Home Lending. “And many are jumping into plans to take their fixer-uppers and turn them into their dream homes. Nearly 95 percent of the Millennials said they planned some kind of renovation in the next three years. We meet with this generation of homebuyers every day to provide expert advice on purchasing and financing improvements.”

Jon Kaplan, Global Head of Partnerships, Pinterest, said, “Chase and Pinterest have similar missions in helping people make their dreams a reality. The partnership between our companies on the Chase Dream Boards visual interactive experience demonstrates the way in which we’re able to offer personalized recommendations that deliver unique value and guidance to potential home renovators. We’re excited to continue growing our partnership with Chase and look forward to bridging the gap between inspiration and action for Chase customers.”

“Whether starting a long-awaited bathroom remodel, or revamping your outdoor space just in time for the summer, collaborating with a trusted advisor throughout the home renovation process is so important,” said Drew Scott.

“By working side-by-side with homeowners, Chase is making it easier for customers to understand how to build home equity and create the home of their dreams,” said Jonathan Scott.

According to the National Association of Realtors, in 2017, 89 percent of Millennial buyers bought a previously-owned home, which are often more affordable in the initial purchase, but also require improvements. Buyers are turning to Pinterest for inspiration surrounding projects big and small, with budget-conscious DIY projects—rooted in practicality—up as much as 300 percent from just one year ago. And projects like a closet overhaul are increasing over 7,000 percent in year-over-year search results.

The data shows that those homeowners looking to remodel are regularly searching Pinterest for creative inspiration and action, but are also actively considering important factors such as financial planning. These Pinterest users are more than 1.5 times as likely to search for topics on budgeting.

Home Depot beats earnings estimates and raises sales outlook as consumers keep spending on homes

Home Depot shares rise after earnings beat street

Home Depot shares rise after earnings beat street   8:15 AM ET Tue, 13 Nov 2018 | 05:59

Home Depot on Tuesday reported quarterly earnings that beat analysts’ expectations and raised its sales outlook for the full year, showing little sign of slowing down despite concerns about softening existing home sales.

Management warned during a conference call with analysts the company will still face tougher comparisons in the foreseeable future because of devastating storms late last year. In the fourth quarter, Home Depot will be comparing against roughly $380 million in hurricane sales booked during the fourth quarter in 2017, CFO Carol Tome said.

Home Depot shares initially rose in premarket trading but closed the day down less than 1 percent.

Here’s what Home Depot reported compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by Refinitiv:

  • Earnings per share: $2.51 vs. $2.26 expected
  • Revenue: $26.30 billion vs. $26.26 billion expected
  • Same-store sales: up 4.8 percent globally vs. growth of 4.7 percent expected

For much of the year, confidence in the U.S. housing market has been soaring, benefiting Home Depot and rival Lowe’s. But with mortgage rates climbing, attitudes had started to turn sour. This may lead to home prices rising at a slower rate and the market cooling down.

Still, Home Depot CEO Craig Menear said Tuesday there is continued “overall strength of demand in the home improvement market,” prompting the company to hike its outlook for fiscal 2018.

Home Depot reported fiscal third-quarter net income of $2.9 billion, or $2.51 per share, up from $2.2 billion, or $1.84 per share, a year earlier. Earnings per share came in better than the $2.26 expected by analysts polled by Refinitiv.

Net sales rose roughly 5 percent from a year ago to $26.30 billion, slightly beating expectations of $26.26 billion.

Sales at stores open for at least 12 months were up 4.8 percent globally and up 5.4 percent in the United States. Home Depot said sales per square foot were up 5.2 percent from a year ago, customer transactions rose 1.4 percent, and the average shopper’s ticket was up 3.6 percent.

Looking to the full year, Home Depot now expects sales to grow roughly 7.2 percent, up from a previous outlook of just 7 percent. It says same-store sales should be up 5.5 percent, up from 5.3 percent.

Analysts anticipate Home Depot may have an opportunity to gain market share in the appliance category after Sears filed for bankruptcy protection and continues to shut stores.

“There’s been a lot of concern out there in the marketplace about a slowdown in housing,” Brian Nagel, Oppenheimer senior equity research analyst, told CNBC. “As I look through [Home Depot’s] results, I’m not seeing it. … The underlying demand for housing seems to be quite good. That typically goes back to jobs growth.”

Given low unemployment, consumers are feeling confident enough to invest in home projects.

Home Depot also said Tuesday it now expects to complete roughly $8 billion in share repurchases for the year, up from initial plans for $6 billion.

As of Monday’s market close, Home Depot shares are up about 12 percent from a year ago to trade around $183.

Fashion-Forward Flooring for the Healthcare and Education Sectors

When it comes to specifying flooring, designers tend to have a tough time finding suitable products for  healthcare and education projects. That’s because these spaces see a lot of action and need to be outfitted with products that perform consistently well. Flooring in a hospital or an elementary school needs to be tough enough to take regular beatings—whether from heavy biomedical equipment or exuberant running and jumping—and pliable enough to provide comfort underfoot. It also needs to resist germs, abet acoustics, and most importantly, look good. It’s a tall order, but one company has a solution that goes above and beyond.

Designed specifically with the healthcare and education sectors in mind, Mats Inc.’s newest flooring product, Tailor Grace, provides a durable, environmentally friendly, and aesthetic alternative to standard commercial flooring options. Designers styling spaces as diverse as classrooms, NICU’s, libraries, and operating rooms can focus on making spaces beautiful knowing that Tailor Grace is equipped to handle the rough demands thrown on flooring products. In addition to being a resilient vinyl flooring product from Mats Inc., Tailor Grace is FloorScore certified, 100% phthalate-free, and manufactured with water-based inks and no heavy metals.

“Tailor Grace emerged from the timeless nature of the capsule wardrobe: well-appointed and edited to include essentials that withstand the test of time,” explains JoAnn Durette, vice president of marketing at Mats Inc. “Like a favorite outfit, Tailor Grace flooring is beautiful and reliable.”

Although its name draws inspiration from fashion, there’s nothing superficial about Tailor Grace. The line features four distinct collections of saturated hues and warm wood tones with matte finishes, all designed to be mixed and matched to create dynamic spaces.

DIY Window and Door Weatherproofing

DIY Window and Door Weatherproofing

According to the Department of Energy, drafts can waste 5% to 30% of your heated or cooled interior air; that’s energy and money down the drain. A little weatherproofing goes a long way, and the good news is there are some super easy and inexpensive ways to reduce drafts around windows and doors.

Weather stripping

With a variety of easy-to-apply options to choose from, weather stripping is one of the easiest ways to cut drafts around windows.

Pressure-sensitive, adhesive-backed foam tape is probably the most common, affordable, and simplest weather stripping to apply. Pick a warmer day to apply it as the adhesive forms a stronger bond at a temperature of at least 60°. Clean and dry the top and bottom of the window sashes. Then simply cut the tape to the lengths needed and apply.

It usually lasts up to five years. If older weatherstripping is falling off, deteriorating, or if the foam has lost its resilience and no longer springing up to fill the gap, it’s time to replace. And don’t forget to lock your windows for a tight seal!

Vinyl V strips are effective for sealing any gaps between window sashes and frames, on both the top and sides of a wood window frame. One side attaches to the window frame and the other side folds in when the window is closed. They are also simple to install with their adhesive backing.

Similar to adhesive-backed foam tape, felt strips are another weatherstipping option that come in rolls of varying lengths, widths and color. It is usually nailed in place, but there are also adhesive-backed versions. EPDM rubber weatherseal tape is a slightly more expensive option but more durable than foam weather stripping.

Adhesive-backed foam tape and felt strips are an easy option for doors too, but the better way to go is a metal flange with a vinyl bulb that is screwed inside the door frame. It takes a little more effort but is much more durable on a door that is open and shut many times a day, and the seal is better.

Complete your door weather stripping with a door sweep. Sweeps go on the bottom of the interior side of an in-swinging exterior door to seal the air gap between the door and the threshold. There are two main types, u-shaped sweeps that slide under aluminum or steel doors and metal strips that screw, nail or staple to the door bottom.

Spray foam and caulk

Foam and caulk may be more intimidating for a beginner DIYer but with a little prep and a steady hand, they are both good options for cracks and gaps around (not inside) window and door frames. For cracks 1/4 inch wide or less, use paintable water-based latex caulk for most surfaces and silicone-based caulk for metal and glass surfaces. Silicone caulking cannot be painted. All caulking periodically needs to be reapplied, especially if the window area is subject to expanding and contracting.

Expanding foam is good for large, accessible gaps because with the long nozzle the foam can expand to fill areas you can’t reach by hand. The key of course, is to not overfill as the foam hardens quickly and is very hard to remove, so take it slow and steady.

Thermal curtains and blinds

Thermal curtains are much thicker than ordinary ones and some have tie-backs to hold them against the wall, further blocking air infiltration. Curtains should reach to the window sill or floor, be hung close to the window, and cover the entire window. When drawn during cold weather, the Department of Energy estimates they can reduce heat loss from a warm room up to 25%.

In winter, close all draperies at night, but open them during the day if the window receives direct sunlight. Additionally, make sure any drapes or curtains (and furniture, too) are not blocking air registers to allow for free circulation of heated or cooled air from your HVAC system.

Pleated, or honeycomb, blinds are another energy-saving window treatment option. Single honeycomb shades add an insulation value around R-2. Double-layer honeycomb shades can reach R-5, blocking up to 62% of heat transfer through windows. More translucent colors that allow some natural light to enter can be used with thermal curtains for even more energy savings.

Draft stoppers

This decidedly low-tech option is also the most flexible. Plenty of cute draft stoppers can be found online for $10 or less, or you can make your own by filling a long sock with quilt batting or polyester fiberfill, and adding some popcorn or dried beans for weight. Simply put your draft stopper at whichever door or window sill that needs a draft blocked.

Whether you do it yourself or hire someone, taking a little time to weatherproof your windows and doors before the really cold weather sets in will pay off big time in comfort and savings.
