Horrifying video shows trans girl ‘harassed by school staff’ in bathroom

A transgender girl in Minnesota has posted a horrifying video that appears to show Osseo Senior High School staff breaking into a bathroom stall while she was using the toilet.

Transgender teen Cece, who attends Osseo Senior High School in Maple Grove, Minnesota, posted two clips to Facebook of an incident in a women’s bathroom.

In the clip, the student is on the toilet with their trousers down while several adults, reportedly members of staff at the school, attempt to break into the locked stall.

“There’s no concern to safety just because I’m using the bathroom.”

One person can be seen peering over the top of the stall, before a stick is used to unlatch the lock on the stall door, which swings wide open in full view of several male and female staff members.

The student narrates: “I’m using the bathroom right now and they just violated me. They’re some perverts.

“There’s no concern to safety just because I’m using the bathroom.

“I’m so scared and violated right now. They just walked into the bathroom while I was using the bathroom for no reason.”

Osseo Senior High School claims clip ‘misrepresents’ the incident

The context of the clip could not be confirmed.

In a statement to CBS Minnesota, a spokesperson for the school claimed the video is “significantly misrepresenting the incident” but declined to give any alternate account of events.

The school said: “[The] staff works very hard every day to help ensure an inclusive school where all students feel welcome, respected and safe.

“We wish we could provide additional details about this incident but are committed to protecting the student’s right to data privacy.”

The school added: “When issues arise involving students, staff take appropriate actions to review the situation.”

Yahoo reports that the teen had been ordered not to use the women’s bathroom prior to the incident.

Osseo Senior High School slammed online

The video has attracted thousands of shares on Facebook and Twitter.

Many users condemned the school’s actions.

One said: “Doesn’t matter if she is trans or NOT!!! They violated her human rights. Standing in the bathroom waiting for her to come out is one thing. But the fact that they took the time using multiple items to get the door open is really sick.”

Another added: “No adult should be opening a bathroom stall door while the CHILD is using the bathroom and exposed!”

The Facebook post also attracted transphobic comments, with the top-rated comment claiming: “Take your ass to the mens bathroom you can’t force you’re alternative reality on other people facts is facts everyone of his cells has a Y chromosome witch makes him a male and males use the men restroom it’s common sense/”

The incident comes despite guidance issued by the Minnesota Department of Education in 2017, which states: “Transgender and gender nonconforming students should be afforded the opportunity to use the restroom of
their choice.

“Any student who wishes not to share a restroom with a transgender or gender nonconforming student can be provided a private space such as a single-user restroom.”

In October, a court ruled that a North Carolina anti-transgender law cannot be used to deny transgender people entry to public restrooms.

U.S. homebuilding rose in October amid a rebound in multifamily housing projects, but construction of single-family homes fell for a second straight month, suggesting the housing market remained mired in weakness as mortgage rates march higher.

Other details of the report published by the Commerce Department on Tuesday were also soft. Building permits declined last month and homebuilding completions were the fewest in a year. Housing starts increased 1.5 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.228 million units last month.

Data for September was revised to show starts dropping to a rate of 1.210 million units instead of the previously reported pace of 1.201 million units.

Building permits slipped 0.6 percent to a rate of 1.263 million units in October. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast housing starts rising to a pace of 1.225 million units last month.

The housing market is being hobbled by rising borrowing costs as well as land and labor shortages, which have led to tight inventories and higher house prices. This is making home buying unaffordable for many workers as wage growth has lagged.

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate is hovering at a seven-year high of 4.94 percent, according to data from mortgage finance agency Freddie Mac. Wages rose 3.1 percent in October from a year ago, trailing house price inflation of about 5.5 percent.

Residential investment contracted in the first nine months of the year and housing is likely to remain a drag on economic growth in the fourth quarter. Economists expect housing activity to remain weak through the first half of 2019.

U.S. financial markets were little moved by Tuesday’s housing starts data.

Single-family homebuilding stalls

Single-family homebuilding, which accounts for the largest share of the housing market, dropped 1.8 percent to a rate of 865,000 units in October after declining in September.

Single-family homebuilding has lost momentum since hitting a pace of 948,000 units last November, which was the strongest in more than 10 years.

A survey on Monday showed confidence among single-family homebuilders dropped to a more than two-year low in November, with builders reporting that “customers are taking a pause due to concerns over rising interest rates and home prices.”

Single-family starts in the South, which accounts for the bulk of homebuilding, fell 4.0 percent last month. Single-family homebuilding jumped 14.8 percent in the Northeast and fell 2.0 percent in the West. Groundbreaking activity on single-family homes dropped 1.6 percent in the Midwest.

Permits to build single-family homes fell 0.6 percent in October to a pace of 849,000 units. These permits remain below the level of single-family starts, suggesting limited scope for a strong pickup in homebuilding.

Starts for the volatile multifamily housing segment surged 10.3 percent to a rate of 363,000 units in October. Permits for the construction of multifamily homes fell 0.5 percent to a pace of 414,000 units.

Tuesday’s data also suggested that housing supply is likely to remain tight in the near term. Homebuilding completions in October fell 3.3 percent to a rate of 1.111 million units, the lowest level since September 2017.

Realtors estimate that housing starts and completion rates need to be in a range of 1.5 million to 1.6 million units per month to plug the inventory gap.

Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on Thursday said tradition and sentiments of the devotees should be respected on the issue of entry of women of all age groups in Sabarimala and gender equality need not be applied on matters relating to the Lord Ayyappa temple.

Kerala has witnessed widespread protests by Ayyappa devotees after the state government said it was bound to implement the Supreme Court’s verdict that lifted the centuries-old ban on the entry of women in the 10-50 age group to the temple, whose deity Lord Ayyappa is considered to be celibate.

Any change on matters relating to religion and faith should be done after consultations with spiritual leaders, Sri Sri said.

There are several temples dedicated to Lord Ayyappa in the country and women are not barred anywhere else except in the hill shrine in Kerala.

“Then, it is a tradition…and people’s sentiments are also there…we have to respect it…” Sri Sri Ravi Shankar told PTI in an interview here.

“It is not a matter of gender inequality here in this temple issue. In fact Indian culture always holds women in great reverence…True equality is when women are assured of safety, have equal opportunities in career and every girl child has access to quality education,” he said.

“However, this temple issue creates such an emotional hurt and shock to people… the devotees…, which could have been avoided..” he said.

The spiritual guru, however, said he was “glad” that the Supreme Court had agreed to hear the review petitions against its September 28 verdict.

The comments by Sri Sri come two days ahead of the two-month-long Mandala Makaravillakku pilgrimage season in Sabarimala that commences on November 17 and attracts millions of devotees from all over the country.

The Art of Living founder, who embarked on a four-day tour to the UAE on an invitation from the ruler of Fujairah, was speaking on the sidelines of his visit here.

Stating that all facts relating to the Sabarimala shrine may not have been presented fully at the apex court, he said even people belonging to other religions, who visit the hill temple, have always followed the rules there as they are part of age-old customs.

The main issue in Sabarimala is the mandatory 41-day ‘Vratam’ (wherein devotees have only vegetarian food and follow strict celibacy). Those who go to the temple, even in the past, follow the ‘Vratam’ and go, he said.

“Women, of course in the menstrual cycle, cannot undertake the 41-day Vratam. And that is the reason they are not going there,” he said.

To buttress his point, he said shoes are allowed inside churches all over the world but people remove it in the temples and mosques in India while entering there to offer prayers.

“So, these all are some cultural, traditional practices. If you ask why don’t you do prayers with shoes or chappal in temples while you can do the same in churches…the answer is that it does not fit,” he said.

Though the logic is the same, it cannot be applied in all contexts. Because, that is not our tradition, the spiritual leader added.

Sri Sri also said he was sure that the apex court would come out with a suitable decision to resolve the present issues while hearing the review petitions.

When asked about his formula to resolve the vexed Ayodhya dispute through mediation, he said his effort was to create a ‘win-win’ situation for both sides.

“In a situation, when they (Hindus and Muslims) come together in a sense of brotherhood of give and take….one gives a piece of land for the temple and the other gives place to build a mosque in a different place…the problem is solved,” he said.

Sri Sri, who has been trying to resolve the Ayodhya dispute through mediation for some time, said he has spoken to hundreds of imams and other spiritual leaders of the Muslim community and none of them had objected to the construction of a Ram temple.

Stressing the need to grow spiritually, he said it helps improving communication, to forget the past, take a new vision and move forward in life with renewed enthusiasm.

The Emirate of Fujairah has invited Sri Sri for yoga celebrations as part of which there would be meditation for world peace called ‘Illuminate Peace’ that will be held at a football stadium here.

After Fujairah, the spiritual leader will lead meditation sessions in Dubai also, apart from visiting a labour camp and conducting a special session for labourers at Sharjah, before returning to India.

The lack of major new launches led demand for new private homes to shrink by almost half in October from a month earlier. But existing launches saw good pick-up three months after the July 6 cooling measures kicked in, analysts say.

Developers sold 487 units last month, down 48 per cent from 932 in September, and 36 per cent lower than the 761 units booked in October last year.

There was only one new launch – the 56-unit freehold condo 10 Evelyn located off Newton Road – which sold two units at a median price of $2,478 per sq ft (psf).

The 202 units from existing projects launched for sale last month were the lowest number since February this year.

“The meagre number of new units launched last month was unsurprising given that developers had put 1,169 units on the market from six non-landed launches in September,” said Ms Tricia Song, Colliers International’s head of research.

The trend is similar to that following earlier rounds of cooling measures “where the number of project launches, units launched and units sold eased in the third month of the measures”, Huttons Asia head of research Lee Sze Teck noted.

“This is likely to be a blip. Buyers are finding value in earlier launched projects and committing to a buy… Sales volumes are still heavily concentrated in the city fringe or rest of central region (RCR) largely due to a number of major launches in the RCR in 2018,” he added.

HUTTONS ASIA HEAD OF RESEARCH LEE SZE TECK, who says the trend is similar to that following earlier rounds of cooling measures “where the number of project launches, units launched and units sold eased in the third month of the measures”.

Ms Christine Sun, Orange Tee & Tie’s head of research and consultancy, noted that 485 of the 487 units sold were from existing launches, up from the average of 460 units sold from such launches in the past 12 months.

“This shows that demand for new homes at existing launches have seen a pick-up after the (July 6) measures,” she said.

The figures were released yesterday by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) based on its survey of licensed housing developers. The above figures exclude executive condominium (EC) units, which are a public-private housing hybrid.

Meanwhile, EC sales nearly doubled to 23 last month from 12 in September, reflecting pent-up demand due to limited stock.

Rivercove Residences has consistently sold at $1,000 psf since its launch in April this year.

Developers moved 510 units, including ECs, last month, reflecting a drop of nearly 46 per cent from September’s 944 units and also 48 per cent lower than the 972 units sold in October last year.

Last month’s top-selling project was Affinity at Serangoon, with 81 units sold at a median price of $1,499 psf. That’s more than double the 31 units sold in September.

Ms Song attributed strong sales to “the developer’s discount in pricing to below $1,500 psf from $1,584 psf in June”.

Stirling Residences sold 75 units at a median price of $1,738 psf; Park Colonial, 52 units at a median price of $1,754 psf; Riverfront Residences, 55 units at a median price of $1,327 psf; and The Tapestry, 26 units at a median price of $1,375 psf.

“Continued take-up at Stirling Residences, Park Colonial, The Tre Ver and JadeScape underscored genuine demand in large city-fringe projects that offer ample facilities and (are) near MRT stations. Projects that are priced affordably below $1,400 psf such as Riverfront Residences and The Tapestry in the suburbs also have supporters,” Ms Song added.

Cushman & Wakefield’s senior director Christine Li expects new sales to rebound this month, fuelled by new major launches such as Whistler Grand, Kent Ridge Residences, Parc Esta and Woodleigh Residences.
