Virginia Tech offers home brewers a chance to learn the craft beer industry

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) – Plenty of home brewers dream of turning their hobby into a business.
For a lucky handful of folks, this week they’re getting a little help with that.

Thirteen hopeful brewers spent Thursday touring and tasting at Parkway Brewing in Salem. It’s part of the Business in Brewing workshop hosted by Virginia Tech’s Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement. Applicants spend the morning in class at the Hotel Roanoke. Later on in the day, they get a chance to tour and taste at successful local breweries.

“A couple friends told me about it,” said Tom Sproul, a current civil engineer and hopeful brewer. “I thought it seemed like a good opportunity. We’re planning to open a brewery in Christiansburg and it seemed like a good, an opportune time to learn some of the inside ways of the industry so that we don’t make any big mistakes.”

Sproul said it’s been helpful to learn how to create a good operating agreement and things to think about for long term growth.
